Statue of Miihkali Perttunen

The bronze monument to ‘the northern Homer, ’ Miihkali Perttunen, serves as gate to the historic part of Voknavolok village.

The statue was cast in Finland by the sculptor Alpo Sailo after a photograph taken by I. K. Inha.It was set up by the Foundation of Arhippa Perttunen in 1991. The sculpture stands on a small pedestal, the base of which is rock. It appears that the unseeing rune singer has sat down on the rock, turning to face Kuitto Lake, and we will soon hear the ancient Karelian lore coming from his mouth. Miihkali took over the tradition of rune singing from his talented father, Arhippa Perttunen. Many poetic lines were recorded from Arhippa, and those were used as a basis of the Kalevala.
