Ethnographic museum (Onchi House)

Next to the old granaries stands Onchi House, a residential house and inn, which is more than a century old. This historic monument has been captured in photographs taken in 1904.

Wars and fires have not damaged this house. In 2014 on the Day of Elijah, an exposition was opened in the renovated house, telling a story of the life led by the northern Karelians. Here visitors can see the house of a wealthy trader and his inn.

Historical information:

The owner of this house was the rich trader Onchi from the Remshu dynasty of traders. The legendary brothers Andrey Remshuev, or Onchi, (born in 1838) and Stepan (Teppana) Vanhala (born in 1841) traded not only in Karelia, but also in Finland. At first, Onchi had a shop in the village of Jalasjärvi, but it burned down in a fire accident, and he continued his business only in Voknavolok. Onchi provided goods for no less than twenty peddling traders. It was said that Onchi was very stingy. His wealth is revealed by this fact: in 1886 after a fire in Vasa, the sum of insurance for the damaged goods was announced, 15 thousand Finnish marks. After the death of Andrey Remshu, his trade was inherited by his son Onchi Pijko, who was in charge of it until the time of revolution. He bought game from the hunters of Voknavolok and Kostamuksha, and then brought it to be sold in Kajaani. Pijko also conducted peddling business in Finland.

During the era of Karelianism, the Onchi House served as an inn in Voknavolok. I. K. Inha and K. F. Karjalainen, among others, spent many nights at the Onchi House. In 1991, the Karelian Ministry of Culture's Department of Restoration had the farm storehouses restored. For the past few decades, the house itself has been used as a dwelling and an office space.
